The Kalmec Union is a country located in central Kalmeria and the largest nation on the planet of Anova. It is made up of 7 principal republics, of which the Kalmec Republic is the largest. It has over 1,923 registered ethnic groups that enjoy a great amount of protection according to the constitution of its federal government. The state religion is Obeliskism, which is practiced by over 80% of the population. The largest region of the union is the No Man's Land, which was conquered during the Kalmec-Würtenstadt Nuclear Conflict.
Kalmec government is federal in nature. The republics certainly enjoy a healthy amount of autonomy, though the federal government exercises increasing power since the reformations of Antietam. The current leading body of the KU is the Interim Government for the Salvation of the Kalmecs.
History
Early History
Covering a large portion of Kalmeria, habitation of the territory now encompassing the Kalmec Union by the sapient species has occurred in perpetuity. The earliest recovered artifacts are about 372,000 years old. Humans became the dominant species on Kalmeria about 90,000 years ago. Around 2,000 years ago the first Kalmec state was a petty monarchy that often clashed with the Boronid and Dervid tribal confederacies. The Kalmec state existed as an independent entity in various forms until the year 2000.
The Modern Era & The Great Suffering
The Kalmec Republic became the dominant state of central Kalmeria by the 1950s. By 1990, The Kalmecs had successfully spread republicanism to most of the states across the region and eventually subsumed them with the acts of union in 2000, officially forming the Kalmec Union. At this time the union functioned as a confederacy rather than an entirely cohesive unit. The Great Suffering was harsh on the people of the union, spreading a radical form of Obeliskism that is taken quite literally with the prevalence of nuclear warfare.
In 2177, the Eulban Republic fully seceded from the union, causing a three way war between them, the Kalmec Union, and Würtenstadt that eventually resulted in the nuclear devastation of the entire border region between the two countries.
The knowledge of who owned what areas of the new No Man's Land were lost through a mix of information warfare, physical destruction, and poor recordkeeping.
Geography
The Kalmec Union spans from the northern deep-coral coasts to the southern Chalchonian plateau, and is the only state to border 3 seas simultaneously, those being the Auroran, Atoric, and the Aoloran seas. It has two major mountain ranges to its southwest and northwest.
The majority of the KU is a humid continental climate, with a major desert to the southeast, jungle to the southwest and tundra to the north.
A lake network known as the Arados splits the Kalmec Republic part of the country from the eastern republics. It is considered the most important lake to the history and economy of the union. The famous Kanal Canal is the longest canal in Kalmeria, spanning from the Kalmec Republic to the Ifchac Republic.
Politics
Officially a presidential republic, the Kalmec Union is in reality an extreme surveillance state that has failed to produce democratically elected candidates since the 2150s. The longest reigning president was Antietam, who was president from 2172 until his assassination in 2199. His successor, the IGSK Council, is considered even less democratic as its leaders are unknown to the people and none of its 1st-level politicians were voted for.
The de jure leader of the Kalmec Union is its foreign Minister, Okama Bilovets. She is an effective mouth piece that holds regular talks with manicured guests at televized meetings every 6 months, known as the National Rejuvination Hour to Discuss Issues Facing the Kalmec Union. She is perhaps the only democratically elected high member of the IGSK government.
Subdivisions
The Union is divided into 7 2nd level units. These are the Kalmec Republic, Boronid People's Republic, Deryziam Republic, Asidiya, Chalchonia, and the Ifchac Republic. They can be referred to as a "Province of the Kalmec Union" or simply a "Republic". Some Kalmec media mistakenly lists an 8th republic, Eulba, Despite its secession from the union in 2177. Scholars believe that this is a mix of the Union's continued cooperation with Eulba, revanchist thought, and low education standards.
Religion
The state religion of the Kalmec Union is the syncretic religion Obeliskism. The Believers of the Obelisk or sometimes Obeliskos believe that the world will be destroyed in a great fire, interpreted as nuclear fire in Modern Obelisk Studies, and that it is the duty of every Obelisk believer to prepare for this eventuality through extremophile lifestyles and doomsday prepping.
There are two major patriarchates, the Patriarchate of Garotia and the Patriarchate of Totoba.
As the consitution protects minorities extensively, religions are included, and the Kalmec Union has a multitude of religions possibly exceeding 2,000 in number. The minority religions of note are Faiyahism, Conventionalism, and Nanchonism.
